Metro News: Do503 Launched, Do512's Sound & Cinema, and Jack Sparrow's Dad

No comments:
Our regular Metro News updates highlight big wins, cool ideas, and notable events from around the Network so you can stay up to date on what your counterparts around the U.S., Canada, and Mexico are doing.

It’s been more than a month since we last checked in with news from around the Network. Check below for some highlights on what your fellow metros have been up to!

Do503 Has Launched

From the moment the Portland team came on board, we were excited to launch Do503. Last Saturday their team officially announced Do503 to the world with a huge party at Portland’s MotoCorsa motorcycle shop. Over 700 people attended, including members of the DoStuff Network from Austin, Dallas, Seattle, and Vancouver. Way to show love for our newest metro!

Check out more photos from the event and be sure to give Do503 a “Like” over on their Facebook page.

Do512 Sound & Cinema

Speaking of big events, Do512’s annual Sound & Cinema series is underway with outdoor movies and live music every-other Wednesday in downtown Austin. June 3rd featured Weekend At Bernie’s with a Q&A from Terry Kiser himself, and July 1st featured Ferris Bueller's Day Off.

The most recent edition took place this Wednesday with Ghostbusters and Latasha Lee & The Black Ties. Check out the full photo gallery here!

Other News

Here's a quick rundown of other big happenings around the Network:

  • B-days for Chicago & Nashville: Do312 turned five and Do615 turned three in the last month!
  • doNYC Signature Blend: The recap video from doNYC’s Jack Daniels Signature Blend series is up. Take a look and feel free to share around with your partners!

Product Update: A Speedier Front End, Import Your Venues and more!

No comments:
Our biweekly Product Updates give you a rundown of all the features and bug fixes that are being deployed - plus one handy tip of the week.

FRONT END SPEEDINESS

Our developers have been upgrading our servers to use Ruby 2.1 (we were previously on 1.9) - which means each metro should notice a significant speed increase both on the front end of the sites and in the app.

SEND US YOUR VENUES

As metros spend more and more time creating venue lists, we have all been asking ourselves: Isn't there a quicker way to create venues than doing so one at a time?

Well, now there is. We have the ability to automatically import a spreadsheet's worth of venue information in just a matter of seconds - with absolutely no dev work required.

This should allow for a much speedier venue-import process:

  • (Have an intern) assemble a spreadsheet with the following columns for all of the venues you'd like to add: title, url, phone, address, city, state, zip, neighborhood, category.
  • Send the spreadsheet to support@dostuffmedia.com. We'll import it for you - and all of the venues will be instantly created (and marked official) with all of the information included in the document.
  • We'll send you an email back letting you know the import is complete.
  • Then, all you have to do is (have an intern) add a photo and description to the venue pages in Radmin, then vote on the venues via the front end - and your list is SET.
We hope this helps significantly cut down the time it takes to create venue lists going forward.

QUICK HITTERS

We removed the 'What To Do In (Metro City) Today' text from all lense pages. It's confusing to filter DoTheBay.com by "East Bay events" and still see a "What to do in the Bay Area today" headline on the page.

We made brand ads with non-DoXYZ.com URLs automatically open in new tabs when clicked.

We added 'Other' and 'Prefer Not To Say' to the list of gender options on giveaways

AN UPDATE TO BIRTHDATES

The 'Birthdate' field will now validate 'Minimum Age' on all giveaways. The field already does this on RSVPs - so we thought we'd make it consistent.

This means that if you 'Require Minimum Age' on any giveaway (or RSVP) and want to collect entrants' birth dates, you no longer have to also 'Ask Minimum Age' - you can just use the 'Birthdate' field to validate user ages.

BUG FIXES

We fixed a lot of bugs this week. Here are some highlights:

TIP OF THE WEEK

Does it ever seem like a /p page has suddenly reverted back to an old version? Or is just completely blank? Many metros have experienced this sensation over the course of the past month - and it can be both a confusing and a terrifying experience - to think that some (or all) of your work has suddenly disappeared.

But rest assured! Your work is not gone. The older edition of the page is just cached in your browser (you can check the page out in an incognito window if you don't believe it). At this point, it's important that you hard refresh the page before proceeding any further. If you 'edit' and 'save' an old version of a page, then your work really will be lost.

So, if you ever see a /p page that doesn't look quite right (or if you just want to make absolutely sure you're seeing the most recent version), please hard refresh your screen. Unsure how to hard refresh? Find out here.

Please be sure to share this information with the rest of your team (especially all of your interns and contributing writers). We'll be making some major improvements to /p pages in the coming months - but in the mean time, this extra care will at least ensure that you never lose your valuable work.

How You (and the network) Did Last Week - 7/13/15

No comments:

Winner of the Week: Do210!

San Antonio stands proudly in the traffic limelight.

San Antonio started off their Goose Island Tastemaker series with a high bar to top. With the reopening of the Limelight, a popular but previously closed San Antonio venue, Do210 saw a fantastic opportunity to throw a preview party with special Tastemaker access and RSVPs for the general public.

The results speak for themselves:
  • Due to the deal coming together so quickly, there wasn't a whole lot of time to promote the event. But when the dedicated email that announced the event hit their list and had their highest dedicated open rate in 6+ months, Do210 knew they had a hit on their hands.

  • When all was said and done, Do210 had 900 people clicking to RSVP for the event and another 3,000+ pageviews on the event itself, accounting for over 25% of Do210's total traffic for the week. Mind you, this was all in the 3 days from event announce --> event date.

  • Best of all, this was Do210's 50th week of having the site live, and they had their highest week of traffic by far to cap it all off. Nice work bagging almost 8K sessions! And looks like you guys drank a fair share of Goose to clebrate.
As we've mentioned in previous KPI Update emails - people go crazy about the opening and closing of bars and venues. Do210 just took that tidbit to the next level by hosting a party around said venue opening.

Think you can do even better with your Goose Tastemaker event in your city? We'll be waiting with a Winner of the Week crown with your name on it.

In the meantime, check out all of your previous week's stats below:

How You (and the network) Did All Last Year - 7/6/15

No comments:

Winners of the Year: Everyone!

We'll risk the comparison to the "everyone gets a trophy" cliche and award Winner of the Week status to all metros for completing a full year of Weekly KPI reports. Just think - around this time last year, you were still pulling your own audience numbers and sending them to us. Three of you weren't even metros yet. Crazy!

All that time means we now have YoY numbers for all metrics! With a 30-second skim, you can see how much your user base has grown in a year, check out if you're adding subscribers at a faster rate, and read your most successful July FB post in 2014. This should all be huge in both benchmarking and planning.

To help even further in your quest to secure the next winner of the week title, we pulled all of the network-wide applicable learnings from past weekly winners, and came up with the...

Top 10 Wins You Could Do In Your Market Right Now:
  1. Run some RSVPs - they can get you 70X the traffic of a standard event page, work best when you get creative about incentivizing attendance, and can single-handedly ramp up your metro's growth.

  2. Talk about how your city is changing on social: These perform unusually well and are right in your sweet spot as in-the-know sites. Think city rankings and venue openings/closings/repurposings

  3. Sharing on FB? Share it the right way. (The right way = using a link share instead of a photoediting your headline and preview texts, and doing everything you can to make sure people with social audiences share your post.

  4. Fests will make or break your traffic! Get the most out of them by hosting aftershowsand thinking of post-festival content that will keep users engaged.

  5. Content: Focus on the big wins. Re-contextualize popular evergreen content and scan for SEO-driven content opportunities. Create a neighborhoods page (then sell it) or run some on-site contests.

  6. BUILD LISTS. They're great for SEOperform well on your other channels, and can position your site as the authoritative resource for harder-to-find events.

  7. Use cloying "[Festival] in [city]!" subject lines to increase open rate. It worked for DoLAand Do214.

  8. Sell some sponsored content, like a lens or a tastemaker collaboration.

  9. Put on an event/event series. Anniversary partiesfree weeks, and genre mixers have all worked in multiple markets. Or if you can't throw an event series, you can at leastpitch an ECP to an existing one.

  10. Monitor, investigate, and ask us questions about your KPIs every week. We're always here to help on this one, and you can start off on the right foot by checking out the most recent week's stats below:

Product Update: Permissions Alerts, Giveaway Questions, Repeating Reminders & More

1 comment:
Our biweekly Product Updates give you a rundown of all the features and bug fixes that are being deployed - plus one handy tip of the week.

Dev is deploying some new updates before the end of the week. Here's what's coming:

Permissions Alerts

Users who do not have 'Event Editor' permissions will see an error message when they click the 'Add Event' button.

Prior to this update, users who lacked the requisite permissions to add events were still allowed to fill out the entire 'Add Event' form - and only saw an error message when clicking to save all of the event information that they had just entered (and were about to lose).

Giveaway Questions

We've consolidated Radmin's 'Pick Winners' screen to include the answers to giveaway questions - so that you don't have to export the event's votes to see them.

Repeating Reminders

Many repeating events (especially happy hours) are created with arbitrary 'repeat until' dates that are so far into the future that it’s easy for metros to forget about these events ever 'ending'. These reminder emails will help inform your team about which repeating events are about to expire - in case you would like to extend their running dates or make changes to the event info.

Bug Fixes

We fixed a bug that was hampering the speed with which upcoming events were displayed when switching days on category shortcuts. We also fixed a bug caused by invalid birthdates and made sure that HazDF's co-reg invitations were appearing in Spanish.

Tip Of The Week

Did you know that the home pages of your desktop site (DoXYZ.com) and app ("The Best") are both shortcuts? Did you know that they function in the same way as your other category shortcuts?

Metros have used this to their advantage by excluding less cool and off-brand categories such as film listings, tech meet-ups and fitness classes from their home pages.

Head over to Radmin -> Content -> Shortcuts and select the "What To Do" shortcut to edit your desktop homepage - and Radmin -> Mobile -> Shortcuts -> "The Best" for your app home page.

Product Update: Permissions Alerts, Giveaway Questions, Repeating Reminders & More
