How You (and the network) Did Last Week - 12/7/2017

Winners of the Week:
Do312 & Do604

Do312 and Do604 both logged top-10 all-time unique email opens for the week of 11/27-12/03 by using subject lines that combined unique events and giveaways in their cities, as well as relevant content that their users could resonate with, to create must-read emails.

Do312

Speaking of resonate, Do312's top emails of the week, unique-open wise, both included cannabis related headline copy. Their 11/28 email subject line led with "Win: Cannabis Sommelier Class, Bassnectar, RunThe Jewels" and helped Chicago record their 5th highest week of unique opens at 128,359 (321,653 subscribers).

While it's not every week your metro will have giveaways for top-tier talent like Bassnectar and Run TheJewels, we love that Do312 put the Sommelier class first in the order of giveaways, drawing attention tothe unusual nature of this class.

Their 11/30 subject line also lead with a giveaway for a free Foster The People DJ Set, but they finishedthe line strong with an attention grabbing "Learn About Weed!" caption (in addition to releasing more tickets for their sold-out Old Forrester event), and I mean, who doesn't want to learn more about weed?
Here are the two subject lines in full:
  • 11/28: Win: Cannabis Sommelier Class, Bassnectar, Run The Jewels | Holiday Market @ Lincoln Park Zoo Tonight | Dinner & A Show w/ Andrea Bocelli
  • 11/30: Free Foster The People DJ Set | Old Fashioned Face-Off (More Tickets Released!) | Learn About Weed!

Do604

The month of November not only saw Do604 tally their highest all-time week of unique email opens (11/6/-11/12), but also their 7th highest all-time for the week of 11/27-12/3 at 7,667 (20,358 subscribers).

What we loved about Do604's email subject line and content for this past week was part subject line construction and part featured content. For instance, their highest performing email's (11/30) subject line brought a heavy call-to-action to email users to inquire into 50 Concerts To See During December, Vancouver Restaurants Open On Christmasand The Weekend Top 10.  All three of these pieces were either custom User Lists or /p/ pages catered to the unique cultural scene in Vancouver, and they were all timely and relevant.

Here are the three subject lines in full from the week:
  • 11/27: Vancouver Patios to Cozy Up On This Winter | Bands To Watch This Week | Win Tickets to Slow Magic
  • 11/29: Top Happy Hours to Hit on Wednesday | Party in the Peaks: WIN VIP to Snowbombing | West End Winter Guide
  • 11/30: 50 Concerts To See During December | Vancouver Restaurants Open on Christmas |The Weekend Top 10

Winners of the Week:
Metros Promoting Timely Holiday Content

Network wide, Holiday Season (Thanksgiving-New Years Eve) can be a slow period. That's why every piece of content that capitalizes on seasonal events, cool hangouts, parties, etc. is crucial to keeping site traffic up. The following metros promoted multiple guides, giveaways, user lists and/p/ pages last week to accomplish just that.

What To Do Now

Big shout out to these metros that not only put together these awesome pieces of content, but also did a great job of promoting them across their platform. Some examples of upcoming timely content that your metro can create are:
  • Grammy Nominees In Your City
  • Bars + Restaurants Open On Christmas Eve or Christmas/Hanukkah/Etc.
  • New Years Eve In Your City
    • Do206 lead yesterday's email with their New Year's Eve guide. What's thestatus of your city's?
  • Festival Fest (formerly 12 Days Of Giveaways)
    • We had a few metros ask us at Summit about 12 Days Of Giveaways, and it's still happening! It will now be called Festival Fest and will be taking place in mid-to-late January.

Proposals Sent This Week

For those of you that attended the Google Analytics panel at Summit, we mentioned that you all now have access to the network GA account. Winners of the Week:

This week, we celebrate two cities with landmark weeks on Facebook:

Do206

Do206 accomplished their highest week of site traffic EVER (14,717 Site Visits) due in large part to this Facebook post linking to the "The Space Needle Is Getting An Upgrade!" /p/ pagehighlighting the remodeling of the Space Needle's new restaurant floor. The /p/ page recorded 5.2k pageviews, 3.4k of which are from Facebook.
The post (which was Do206's second most engaging Facebook post ever) amassed 2.6k engagements, 3.3k shares and 1.3k comments, and is a great example of the tactic of breaking news on social media, more specifically local news (Do512 saw similar results with this "LaZona Rosa Is Back, Baby!" post).

This breaking news tends to strike a cord with residents of our metros on a personal level (whether its about a music venue, restaurant, monument, etc.) and fosters a great bed for conversation between Facebook users, their friends and family, and other users on our social accounts.

Do317

The Indy team is back again with another awesome use of social media (particularly Facebook) to answer the question "What Am I Doing Tonight?" with one of their most engaging posts of all time. Do317 answered that question by posting this beautiful video for the Indiana Chinese Lantern Festival, which helped bring in nearly 1k of the 3.3k overall pageviews to the Lantern Festival event page. The video post generated 618 engagements, 554 shares and 201 comments.

While Do317 eventually ended up putting money behind this post due to its success, the video gained notable traction organically, highlighting Facebook's focus on video content, regardless of if it is originally promoted or not.

Huge congrats to both of these metros for crushing the social media game. We hope everyone in the network has an awesome Thanksgiving break and as always, feel free to reach out to Support for any and all questions.

When we think giveaways, we tend to just think music, movies or comedy. But there's another type of giveaway that you can leverage to gain some sweet user growth, and that is... food giveaways! One metro did just that this past week, which is why they're our:

Winner of the Week:
Do604

Our friends in Vancouver saw their highest ever number of Unique Email Opens (9,002) this past week, as well as their 3rd highest ever number of Unique Email Clicks (1,187). This was in large part due to this Shaun Verreault Trio show that included the chance to win a $100 dinner for twoat Chambar, one of Vancouver's premiere restaurants. The traffic from this email link alone, from their 11/6 email's top content block, accounted for the second highest source of traffic to Do604's website for the week

Honorable Mentions

A major focus of Summit this year was the extension of DoStuff into additional platforms, including, but not limited to, social media. We wanted to mention some metros that really shined on Facebook, specifically for how they crafted their messages, as well as overall performance of these posts.

Do317

  • One thing that really stands out about the folks in Indy and how their social messages are crafted, is how “local” they sound. Plus, we're huge fans of how well they differentiate between their news link, headline and sub-headline copy. Some great examples of these hyper-local posts include:

DoLA

  • Los Angeles is a happening city with plenty of transplants, but that doesn’t mean the City of Angels doesn’t have a distinct voice. DoLA’s social team did a great job this week of utilizing their Facebook page to promote /p/ pages, of which include:
    • How to Be a Dodger Fan in LA
      • We love this /p/ page promotion because it was timely with the World Series, and the message was crafted to hit a broad range of LA residents.
      • Performance
    • Our Favorite Pumpkin Patches
      • We love this post for the same reason as above, that it’s timely and broad, but we also love that DoLA shared a piece of content to promote their own, which turned into a relatively engaging, organic post.

The month of October saw FOUR different metros -- Do502, Do615, Do214, Do210 -- record their highest all-time weeks of site traffic (Do210 even broke their record twice). These extraordinary weeks of traffic all shared a similar theme: a Guide, Event Page and/or /p/ Page that was timely, seasonal and saw huge traffic boosts from organic search.

This theme is what led two of the above mentioned metros to earn this week's Winner Of TheWeek!

Winner(s) of the Week:
 Do210 & Do214

Our awesome friends in Texas, Do210 and Do214, respectively earned their HIGHEST EVER weeks of site traffic. Let's dig into how they accomplished this awesome goal:

Do210

The folks over in Countdown City saw huge boosts in organic traffic from a variety of seasonal events.

Do214

Our buddies in D-Town also got huge boosts in organic traffic from Halloween-related events, as well as some successful email content pushes.
  • The Oak Lawn Halloween Block Party gave way for two seperate Event Pages that killed it in Google organic search.
  • The Do214 Giveaways page tallied 1.2k overall pageviews.
    • Just shy of 1k of these pageviews came from the Do214 email Newsletter.
  • We also saw some solid email traffic numbers to the Ultimate NTX Beer WeekExperience Giveaway

Content You Can Replicate

With the results that these timely and seasonal pieces of content like 'Friday The 13th Tattoo Guides' and Halloween Guides have seen, we highly recommend jumping on upcoming opportunities to score some sweet organic traffic in these otherwise slow upcoming months. Here are a few examples of content that has historically performed well that you and your metro can replicate:

🎃 Metros With Halloween Guides ðŸŽƒ

This week we wanted to draw some light on the metros that got ahead of the game and not only put together Halloween Guides last week, but also promoted those guides in email, social or Main Nav. We've found that users are likely to utilize our platform to make their plans well ahead of time for big events like Halloween (in this case at least two weeks) and we think it's rad that these metros are capitalizing on that insight. Big ups to these metros for getting ahead of the competition and getting these guides together! By the time everyone in these cities that didn't plan ahead begins to scurry and starts Google'ing what to do for Halloween, these guides will have picked up plenty of steam and will have a much better chance of surfacing in search.
If your team has a Halloween guide in production that is ready to be pushed out to your users, that guide should be a top priority. Let's get everyone excited for their favorite holiday!

With that in mind, don't forget to start getting ahead with your "What Restaurants & Bars Are Open On Thanksgiving & Christmas," "What To Do On NYE," and other time senstive, seasonal guides and reap that sweet, sweet search karma.

Great work everyone, and as always, feel free to hit up support with any questions on this!
