What DoStuff's Doing: GTD, NBD, and SXSXSXSX

Weeks 2/13 - 2/27

We've gotten some serious things DONE these past few weeks at DoStuff: an array of product improvements, our first ECP on the new platform, Bonnaroo's launch, a new NBD hire and SX site development as well as planning. The details are all right here!

Product Improvements

We made some important changes to our platform the last few weeks.

Small but sweet:
  • 1. Time views, such as Calendar or Weekend, are now associated with the Top 3 most popular events on your site for those days rather than your Top Picks account
  • 2. Brand ads now display on alternative listing pages such as http://do512.com/artists and http://do512.com/venues
  • 3. The # of events on a listing page now appears at the top of the page. If you want this removed, just let us know.
  • 4. Instead of “<VENUE> added <ARTISTS>” appearing in the event activity feed, the artists attached to a show are linked at the top of the event description
  • 5. End times for events with assigned end times now SHOW
  • 6. Cookies will now save a preferred listing view (map vs. standard list for example) so that each time a user navigates back to a page, they’ll see events by the last view that they selected

Fun Fixes:
  • 1. We fixed a bug that was messing with RSVP list download and sending
  • 2. The "Follow User" button is now working across your sites
  • 3. The Giveaway activity feed text will no longer include “<NAME> is gonna win some free tickets to this show” because some of your users thought this meant they may have actually won

On Deck (Items you've asked for that will be complete soon in no particular order):
  • 1. Cache fixes
  • 2. Search result accuracy (Avicii does have a page on your sites!)
  • 3. Posting links to Facebook will include images and info

New ECP Preview

Our first partner site has launched on the new ECP platform. And in español! The new ECP platform works like the lenses powering Do512's current SX site. The major differences from the old platform are obviously visual, but it is a holistic improvement to get our ECPs a better, faster site.

We still have tweaks to make and features to add before you begin the work of talking to current ECP partners about the transition. We'll walk you through that process given the timeframe that works best for you. This is simply to show you the progress we've made and get you excited for what you will soon have available!

You can visit LifeBoxSet, HazDF's first ECP partner, to check it out!

Festivals

Bonnaroo launched its lineup without a hiccup last week! And you all are now setup to run a Giveaway with fest tickets! We continue to support a myriad of festivals, most recently Center of the Universe, Forecastle, Hangout... It's full speed ahead into fest season.

Programs

Adi will be working with PBR on sponsored events in six cites! Goose continues to be stellar. We'll be talking more program prospects with the network later this afternoon.

NBD FTW

Our NBD team has tripled in the past few weeks with Graham Hickey joining as the third member to lead network brand sales. He comes to the team with extensive experience, especially in entertainment/music/media. Though based in Chicago, he'll be spending a lot of time initially here in Austin learning the DoStuff ropes and getting some Vitamin D.

Network News

HazDF is officially our first international site to launch! Check them out on Facebook and Twitter if you haven't done so already.
Armando hablando at their big press conference debut with IMAS.

Do312 made the local news with their Snowbrawl 2014 spectacular!

Want your news shared with the network here? Just let us know!

SX Stuff

The SX lense itself continues to get refined. Quickview for both listing and artist pages has been improved. A bug was fixed thanks to much sleuthing that was preventing users from successfully RSVPing. We switched our geo-targeted registration service to be more precise. And just this morning, we moved the lense from the "sx2014" subdomain to http://2014.do512.com/ due to sensitivity about subdomain copyright.

Do512 continues to work overtime building up comprehensive content. Traffic and RSVPs have been heavy enough to force us to ramp up more servers.

Later today, we'll have a call to cover everything you need to know regarding autoregistration, RSVP partnerships, and our Bocce Tournament here at DoStuff HQ.

Fef sent out the official invite, but here is a link to the event where you can RSVP:
The blue bocce ball is actually an Italian cigarette mascot making a special guest appearance in our poster art.

DoStuff Optimization

Mary has SOUND PROOFED the offices in our office. If you noticed when visiting that they leaked noise, that is no longer an issue! We also now have full access to the upstairs "treehouse" for special calls and meetings and plan on putting in a treadmill desk.

Scott will be fundraising these next few weeks so we can make keep making growth strides.

March = Madness

Enjoy the fun! Stay as sane as relatively possible (or not)! We look forward to seeing many of you here soon!

Cache Updates!

As we continue to receive feedback from you all, we continue to improve our caching process so that important updates happen a) IMMEDIATELY -and- b) with NO EXTRA ACTION needed from you.

In addition to the cache buster buttons in your SASS editor, you will notice that user pages have a cache buster button:

The button is in case you make a change that does not show on your site right away and you need to force the update.

We have made it so that user votes DO show immediately on a user page. We recently learned that adding a Giveaway to an event does not immediately add the event to your Guestlist/Giveaways page, so we will also be fixing that to show immediately.

When you find that you are having to use the cache buster buttons for changes that should appear immediately, please let us know so we can improve the caching process and make it so those changes happen without you using the button. The button is a means of ensuring your content gets updated as we streamline the longterm approach to combining speed + timeliness.

So let us know in DSD when you find you are cache busting where you don't think you should have to be!

Some Important Fixes!

Happy Valentine's Day, Doers!

We have some special improvements as our gift to you.

1. User/List votes show IMMEDIATELY instead of requiring you to edit the user profile or bust a cache!

2. The "Force minimum age?" option when creating an RSVP will no longer be default checked. If you do select to enforce minimum age, the user's response in the modal will override the birthdate set in their profile. So there should never be a need for a user to change their birthdate.

"Ask if Minimum Age?" when creating an RSVP is default checked because collecting that user data is important for selling to sponsors, so be sure to select an age or uncheck it when requested.

3. We increased the number of events that show on a single page from 10 to 25! Now your users can more immediately see how comprehensive your listing is!

4. On Do512, users can create events and directly add them to the SX lenses!

What DoStuff's Doing: Lense/List Love, Product/Program Progress, and Office Operations

Weeks 1/28 - 2/12

Episode 5 is in full force here at DoStuff with a few projects already marked "DoNE!" and many more moving forward, including lenses, the Guestlist app, support resources, and NEW Doers.  All the details below.

Lense/List Love

Maybe "lense" shouldn't have an "e" at the end. Maybe "DoStuff" should be two words. Maybe there is genius is going against the grain and Facebook with be copying our "lenses" soon enough.

After our Speed Optimization project, our Lense/List project has been top priority. Lists have always been a huge driver of traffic and way of featuring content unique to our platform. Lenses are similar to lists but with more STUFF to serve as comprehensive curation for SX or scenes, like LGBTQ to metal.

Check out these SX pages of beauty:
SX Event List
SX Artist Quickview
In the past two weeks, we've developed design customization for lenses and shortcut functionality that is the same as on your sites proper. We are continuing to develop lenses and will keep you posted on our progress so that you can get excited about implementing them soon enough!

A/B Tests

Two of our most recent tests were fails! Which is ultimately a win as we move toward best defining what works/what doesn't on your sites.

  • 1. RSVP Modal Entry on List Pages - The results for this test were not conclusive. And nobody felt passionately about it. So when on a list page, RSVP/Giveaway entry will direct to and take place on the event page rather than in a modal.

  • 2. Generic Placeholder Text Replacement - It turns out that users are more likely to open the search modal when the placeholder text reads random suggestions like "Open X" or "SXSW" than "Search events, artists, venues, lists."  You can checkout Justin's breakdown of results here
The next A/B test we will run you are going to L-O-V-E so much you're going to want to share it! That's right, you all asked and we will test: Facebook and Twitter share buttons are going to be input in the event details section of event pages.

Guestlist App

The long-awaited app for your RSVP list management is near close to testing phase. Check out this preview:

Other Improvements

We've made other wide-ranging improvements to our product these past few weeks:
  • *Event images can be scraped into the cover or poster space. By default, they scrape as the poster image if there is a headliner attached, but you can request a specific scraper fix to have event images input as the cover.
  • *Artist, venue, and user pages now have a Cover image as well as an Icon image as opposed to a Hero and Default.
  • *We continue to make improvements to our caching system so that we can combine speeeeeeed with necessary timely updates.
    • -> By EOD today, USER VOTES should automatically break the user page cache to show those votes immediately. That means whenever you update a List with new events, you should not have to worry about updating anything in Admin or manually busting a cache.***
  • *A pretty new "Sold Out" tag now displays over "Sold Out" events. All you have to do is make sure "Sold Out" is checked on the event page in Admin.
  • *End times now show on events! End dates for same date ending shows do not.
  • *User page fixes: view Followed Artists without seeing dupes and the "Follow" button (because they are already followed).
  • *LANDING pages for new metros prepping for Launch. See Do214's:

User Images and Page Changes + Other Fixes

User Images

We made a change to user images (venue and band images, too) to include an icon as well as a cover photo (formerly known as the hero). We did our best to migrate the default image that had been showing as the user icon for Tastemaker votes across the site to the icon space. If you notice any differences with icon images, this update would be the cause, but you can re-upload the appropriate icon in your "Manage photos" modal.

We also made a fix so that when users on the front-end of the site update their image, it updates as their cover photo.

User Pages

You can now page through your followed artists without seeing dupes. And you won't see a "Follow" button for your artists because you are already following them!

Other Fixes

  • *Merging events no longer risks creating broken links but forwards the merged event to the proper event page.
  • *We were automatically optimizing photos, but this made graphic images look not great. So we removed this feature and images that you upload will appear on the site exactly the same as the original image.
  • *We reduced the font size of event cards in map view because, as we've learned, bigger is not always better.
  • *The end date for events that end on the start date do not show. End times DO!

A/B Testing Updates + Scraped Image Fix + Logo BIGGER + Caching

We've made some recent changes relevant to our A/B tests, event images, your logo, and caching. Check it all out below.

A/B Test: Entry Modal a Meh

On your listing pages, we tested opening a modal to allow users to enter RSVPs and Giveaways. Since this did not significantly affect entries, we decided against making this change across the platform. So your users will continue to be directed to the RSVP/Giveaway entry form on the event page.

A/B Test: Placeholder Text Clarity

We are currently testing whether replacing your chosen placeholder text in the search bar with "Search events, artists, venues, lists" will increase search modal opens and use of search.

What this looks like:

We're running this for 50% of users on Do512, Do312, and doNYC.

Note: We made the search placeholder text for ALL the same color as your "Latest" and "MyXXX" text.

Scraped Images

A while back, we messaged how scraped images from venue calendars should work but made some changes to the process:

  • *If an event has bands attached, then the scraped image for the event will be input as the poster image.
  • *If an event has NO bands attached, then the scraped image will be input as the cover image (formerly know as "hero").
If you wish for all scraped images for a particular venue to be input as cover images automatically, you can request a scraper fix for all images to to be input as the cover image.

Logo Sizing

Many of you were inputting custom CSS to force your logo to appear larger. We've fixed the logo sizing so you do not need to add that CSS. Remove it as needed. If you noticed any issues with your logo, this may have been the cause.

Caching and Updating Changes

On a final note, we have heard from some of you that the site has been slower to update certain changes. When you encounter these, follow these steps:

1. Hard refresh (PC = control + F5, Mac = command + shift + r)
2. Cache bust: http://doXXX.com/editors/sass/edit#cache

We are continuing to improve our caching process so that it does not cause you frustration and lack of timeliness.  When you encounter areas that are not updating as they should or it would be important to update in a more automated way, let us know!

For example, we removed the higher level cache from Featured Event ads, so changes and additions should be updating automatically without you having to take the above steps.

Also, promo user pages have been slow to show recent event votes. As a solution, we will be ensuring user pages update with each new vote immediately. In the meantime, you can open the user page to edit in Admin and "Update" without making changes to show those votes right away.

Any other issues, please send our way through DSD or by email.

Thanks for your patience so we can keep picking up the pace :)
