Out-Of-The-Box Editorial Pages

This week, we wanted to highlight metros that have taken some risks and produced successful editorial content that is outside of our usual categories.

Whether this content performed well due to timing, obscurity, or just plain luck, users come to our sites for a unique, local perspective on their cities. While "Where To Get Sushi in [Insert City]" is always a great driver of traffic - and a useful piece of content - any online publisher or blogger can create their own version of that content.

While most pages tend to get a good chunk of their traffic from email (like a majority of our content), the quirky and unusual guides can create viral and conversational opportunities in social. And with Facebook's News Feed update, the more chances for comments, tags and shares we can give to our content, the better.

Without further ado, here's a list of successful, out-of-left-field /p/ pages from 2018 (so far):
Notable takeaways:
  • Of these 10 /p/ pages, there were only 2 pages whose highest source of traffic wasn't email.
  • 3 of these /p/ pages are locally focused announcements or news.
  • Only 1 of these /p/ pages was music focused.
  • Only 1 of these /p/ pages was food focused.
  • 2 of these /p/ pages were fitness or activity focused.
